Hundreds of teachers and parents attend rallies in Birmingham and Leeds

Derby teachers from both NUT and NASUWT attended the Rally for Education in Birmngham on Saturday. At Birmingham over 500 attended, packed into the main hall and 2 overspill halls!  A similar number were at the Leeds Rally. We heard speeches from Chris Keates (NASUWT General Secretaary), Kevin Courtney (NUT Deputy General Secretary), a headteacher, a governor, parents and young people.  All were unanimous in their condemnation of the government's attack on teachers and education.  The Rally was part of the joint union campaign to protect teachers and defend education and sent a shot across the bows of the ConDem Coalition.
There was a lively impromptu demonstration which marched from New Street Station to the ICC - over 300 strong by the time we reached the conference centre!
