Mr Gove and Mr Men

Michael Gove on Thursday made a speech intended to raise cries of 'tchoh' and 'typical' from readers of the nation's newspapers. Apparently, trendy teachers are reducing World War Two to the level of a Mr Men story!

Here is how one paper renowned for its sober reporting and exhaustive fact-checking reported the speech:

Interestingly enough however, this wasn't the whole story. It turned out that the lesson in question was designed to help Year 11s show their learning about the rise of the Nazis by designing a lesson in which they would teach Year 6 students and use the Mr Men to help them do this. So, not an entirely fair characterisation by Mr Gove.

So far, so dismal. In an amusing twist, however, he then proceeded to show a complete ignorance of teaching methods, implying that the best way to teach would be to read an entire textbook to a class. I don't know what would happen if you were to try to explain Bloom's taxonomy to him, but I think there'd be blood on the whiteboard.

Which is why it is so satisfying to see this - thank you, Paul Bernal!
