STAND UP FOR EDUCATION STRIKE 10th JULY - WE ARE NOT ALONE!

On Thursday July 10th over a million schools and local government workers may be on strike over pay. The NUT is calling members out for a one day strike to coincide with this day of action.  Our dispute with Michael Gove and the government is not only over the derisory 1% pay offer (which not all teachers will not get!) but also because he is taking away our national pay scales, making us work until we are 68 before we can claim our pension - while at the same time paying more - and allowing a culture to develop in many of our schools which has pushed teachers into working in excess of 60 hours per week.
Previous strike action has won concessions - teachers over 50 have had their pensions rights safeguarded and younger teachers will get a better deal than Gove first proposed.  The STRB refused Gove the right to get rid of the working hours safeguards of 195 days and 1265 hours of directed time because of our action and our last strike forced publication of the workload statistics. There is much more to win and if we don't continue to fight, Gove will come back with more attacks on both teachers and pupils.
With teachers leaving in their droves because of disillusion, exhaustion or being driven out through jumped up competency charges, our fight is not just for our own terms and conditions of employment but also for the very future of teaching and the education we can provide for our pupils.
City of Derby NUT will be holding a rally jointly with Unison, GMB, Unite and other unions in the Market Place at 11am on 10th July.  We will be marching from the Kingsmead picket line at 10.30am.
On Saturday 5th July we will be holding a stall and leafleting parents and the general public to explain why we have to take action. Previous stalls have got a great response and parents are on our side. The stall will be at The Ram in Derby City Centre from 10am to 1pm. Join us on Saturday and  strike on Thursday 10th.
