Chris Williamson MP and Councillor Hussain back our Stand Up For Education Manifesto!

Boost for the Stand Up For Education Campaign!

Local MP supports a better vision for education

Chris Williamson, MP for Derby North, last night met a delegation from Derby NUT and pledged his support for our Stand Up For Education manifesto.

The manifesto, which can be downloaded from the NUT website here, offers positive ways to fix the problems in our education system which have been caused or exacerbated by the current government. We ask for:
  • An end to academisation and free schools, and for local authorities to be able to take these schools back under their oversight, to bring democratic control back to the school system.
  • An end to Ofsted, and redeploying the £156m spent on inspections annually to improve schools through collaborative means, as seen effectively in the London Challenge.
  • Stop the funding cuts to education
  • Bring back a broad curriculum which includes art, practical and vocational subjects.
  • End the constant testing of children.
  • All teachers should be qualified or on a route to achieving qualified status.
  • End child poverty.
  • End profiteering from education.
Chris told us:

It is essential that the fragmentation of education and the constant undermining of the teaching profession is reversed.

I therefore strongly support the NUT's 'Stand Up For Education' manifesto for our children's education, which should serve as a blueprint for the future of education in England and Wales.

Chris was joined by Councillor Fareed Hussain who is the cabinet member for Children and Young People in the city. They have shown that some of our politicians are willing to stand up for a better education - let's keep up the pressure on others to do the same!
