Support Junior Doctors!

Doctors in the BMA are preparing to take industrial action in the next few weeks following the imposition of unacceptable working conditions by a government minister who refuses to listen to the people who work in the profession. This is a story which will sound familiar to teachers everywhere.

On Saturday, members of the BMA in Derby petitioned the public to support their calls for Jeremy Hunt to change the imposition of the new contracts on Junior Doctors in the NHS. Members of campaign group 38 Degrees were there to support them, as were members of the NUT. We stand in solidarity with doctors, just as we do with support staff in our schools, as they face unacceptable attacks on their terms and conditions by a government which wants to cut already stretched public services beyond breaking point. The turnout for their ballot showed an overwhelming support for the action; as teachers we know that the decision to strike is not taken lightly and the turnout gives some indication of the desperate situation into which the Department of Health has plunged the NHS.

At the Unite The Resistance conference in London last Saturday Yannis Gourtsoyannis from the BMA explained the urgent need to take action and for other trades unionists to support them.
