Parliamentary Petition: School staff are worth 5%, children deserve properly funded schools
As teachers will know, as well as an enormous increase in workload, massive funding cuts and increased uncertainty over our workplaces thanks to free schools and academy conversions, we have experienced a cumulative 14% pay cut over the last seven years.
At the same time we have, not surprisingly, seen a collapse in the numbers of graduates entering the profession and an increase in those leaving.
Teachers have had enough, and another below-inflation pay rise this year amounts to more of the cuts we have seen for the rest of this decade.
The National Education Union has, along with other education unions, put in a pay claim for an immediate 5% pay rise. This puts us in line with the claims of other public sector workers and is vital if students are to get the committed, excellent teachers they deserve.
A key part of this demand is that the rise is granted and additional funds are granted to pay for it. It is part of our campaign to reverse the funding cuts that are affecting 9 out of 10 schools in England.
