This year we have moved a couple of meetings around from the dates originally planned, partly due to large campaigns such as the pay campaign, and partly to encourage Derby members to take an active role in union democracy.
On 16th November we will hold a second extraordinary general meeting. This will be focused on:
- Building and winning the pay and funding campaign
- Encouraging members to write and submit motions to Annual Conference
As with our last EGM, we aim to keep the main meeting short - 45 minutes, but offer a casework clinic following the meeting so that you can get advice on the issues affecting your school!
The meeting will be on Friday 16th November from 4.30 - 5.15 pm with refreshments at our office:
Southgate Business Centre
Normanton Road
Derby
DE23 6UQ
A full agenda and guidance on writing conference motions can be downloaded here and is also below:

ATL
Districts and NUT Associations are invited to submit up to 6 original motions
each. The agreed word limit for original
motions is 350 words. Motions will be considered by the Conference Committee whose
remit includes editing motions to achieve factual accuracy, eliminate
ambiguity, or to meet the maximum word limit, they may also reject motions that
exceed the word limit. Please adhere to
the word limit.
Please
make sure motions discussed at association and district meetings are within the
law and aims and objects of the Union. Anything
outside this definition should not be discussed or submitted as it will not be
circulated for priority voting, or appear on the Conference agenda.
The following
guidance is offered to assist Associations & Districts prepare motions for
Conference:
It’s helpful
if action points are printed in bold to draw them to the attention of delegates
and laid out under headings with numbered points for each part, the following
order is suggested:
·
“Conference notes:”
·
“Conference believes:”
·
“Conference instructs the Executive to:
Motions
should not instruct the Joint General Secretary, other Union officials or
individual members of the Executive. Also, please refer to politicians by their
title rather than their name.
Each motion
should deal with one subject and be clear in its objective, avoiding ambiguity
and the possibility of more than one interpretation or intention. It is suggested that argumentation is not
included in the motion, as it may be developed during the debate and will
impact on the word limit.
Please pay attention to the following:
·
always use the phrase “the Executive of the National Education
Union”
·
don’t use abbreviations for organisations without
spelling out
their name at
the first mention;
·
don’t use full stops in initial abbreviations,
e.g., TUC, DfE;
If you would
like the Union to affiliate to a campaign or body, please attach the
constitution of the organisation for ease of reference.
For the purpose
of calculating the word limits, the following criteria will apply:
- acronyms
in common usage count as one word (i.e. TUC = one word)
- hyphenated
