Students struck on the last day of half term in a fantastic display of the seriousness with which so many of our young people are treating the climate crisis.
Hundreds of young people came out to demonstrate and held an impromptu march around the city centre before demonstrating on the steps of the Council House, calling for urgent and radical action to tackle climate change.
The NEU recognises the extent of the climate emergency and supports students in their actions. At our Annual Conference in April we passed a motion on climate change which states:
- We recognise that the latest UN climate report shows that without more rapid action there will be at least a 3 degrees temperature rise by 2100 … the transition to a zero-carbon society to keep below a 1.5 degree increase is the most urgent problem facing humanity and is technically feasible and the obstacles are entirely political.
- The consequences of a failure to act or an unjust transition … will be severe for our members, our communities, the children we teach and - in the worst case - could threaten our survival
- [We] stand in full solidarity with all students striking or protesting against climate change.
We were very pleased to welcome climate strikers to our AGM on 17th May and had a great discussion about the need for teachers and support staff to show solidarity with students in this campaign. Members who were able to do so were proud to show support on the last strike day.
