Stand Up To Racism in 2020

EDIT: MARCH POSTPONED DUE TO CORONAVIRUS. IT WILL BE RESCHEDULED LATER IN THE YEAR WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

Racism Not Welcome in the UK

In the UK we have seen over the last few years several serious attempts by the far right around figures like Tommy Robinson and the anti-immigrant populist right around people like Nigel Farage to organise in the UK to produce racist movements in recent years.

The fact that one of Boris Johnson's first acts as PM after the election was to repeal the Dubs Amendment, abandoning some of the most vulnerable children in the world, and the current furore as his government deports Britons in a way that shows they have not changed since the Windrush scandal, show that there is a real danger of racist ideas becoming mainstream. The NEU is not affiliated to any political party, but Jeremy Corbyn really got to the heart of this in PMQs this week:

The awful anti-semitic attacks in London over the Christmas period and since warn that racists are gaining confidence in this climate.

The NEU has a proud tradition of anti-racist politics and in Derby we are part-sponsoring the coach to the annual demonstration against racism to mark the UN Anti-Racism day on 21st March in London.

Because of our sponsorship, NEU members will travel free on the coach, so if you would like to join the demonstration please email kieran.picken@neu.org.uk.

Back in Derby, the next local Stand Up To Racism organising meeting is on Monday 24th February at the Multi-Faith Centre - all welcome.
