Welcome to the first in our daily blogs from Annual Conference. I may be biased, but I believe NEU Annual Conference is the most important educational event in the calendar. This is the largest meeting of members of the largest education union in Europe, where we democratically meet to make policy for the coming year.
The conference proper starts on Monday, but as Secretary one of my jobs is to help sort the accommodation for the delegation, make sure everyone knows what's happening and can get into the conference OK. As a parent, it also means finding the creche and saying goodbye while they run off excitedly to dress up as ladybirds.
So far, touch wood, no major problems. I have managed not to max out the credit card at the Bookmarks stall (official booksellers to the TUC) yet, a true test of reserve and mettle. We had to get the kids to bed, so missed Jeremy Corbyn speaking at the NEU Left fringe meeting unfortunately - but Saroj from our delegation was able to make it so hopefully I can persuade her to give us a few words for this blog post.
I hope all members of the delegation will contribute to these daily blogs.
Monday is the first day of Conference proper. We will be hearing motions on Ofsted, GCSEs and A Levels, workload and pay amongst others. All really vital topics to those of us who work in education, but as you will know I believe strongly that the union needs to be building an effective pay campaign leading to a ballot of members for industrial action, so I will be particularly focussed on this debate!
