The NEU is currently engaging all its teacher members in the state sector in an INDICATIVE (electronic) BALLOT over the government's deeply inadequate offer for teacher PAY and FUNDING this year.
Thanks to Derbyshire NEU for making this video with NEU members talking about why they're voting:
If you haven't yet voted, here are 6 reasons to vote to REJECT the government’s offer and YES to strike action:
1. 1. The current government proposal for teacher pay is both a significant real-terms pay cut (well below both CPI and RPI inflation measures) and because it is unfunded will take money out of school budgets so there is less for students.
2. 2. Thanks to our strike action in 2023, we were able to win more pay than we lost, but we also won the funding to pay for it. The government’s proposal erodes that victory by eroding the additional funding we won.
3.
3. The vast majority of schools across the country will face cuts as a result of
this proposal:
See how Derby and your school will be affected using the School Cuts website here: https://schoolcuts.org.uk/
4. 4. The government’s proposals will mean worse per-pupil funding cuts than any year under the Tories:
5. 5. The best chance to avoid strike action and get a pay rise and funding for it is a big turnout now. Showing the strength of feeling of NEU members to the government will put pressure on them to make a better offer.
6. 6. We cannot solve the recruitment and retention crisis that has led to the current workload burdens within teaching without making teaching an attractive profession to join and stay in. Around half of all new teachers leave within five years of qualifying. The government can’t hope to meet its target of 6,500 new teachers if it does not address this urgently.
So please use your vote today!
