People's March for the NHS

As you will hopefully be aware, we asked for volunteers to join the People's March for the NHS on its way through Derbyshire. Many thanks to the colleagues who walked and hobbled their way from Chesterfield to Mansfield on Wednesday. We lost count of the number of people who came up to us during the day to say how much they appreciated seeing us (and our modestly-sized flags), showing solidarity with the 300-milers making the epic trek down to London.

The People's March for the NHS is a reminder that other public services are under as vicious an attack from this government as anything we have seen in education. Many of NHS workers' experiences are the same as ours: stealthy creep of profit-mongers and privateers hijacking public services, attacks on pay, working conditions and pensions, and a concerted attempt to blame staff for the shortcomings caused by cuts to funds and investment.

This march deserves the full support of members everywhere. We all have a stake in the NHS, whether we work for it or use it - or are lucky enough not to have used it much yet.

Everywhere we went we received honks of support from the public and people turning out on the streets to applaud, cheer or thank the 300-milers and those marching with them, and towns across Derbyshire heard the cries of 'Whose NHS? OUR NHS!'.

If you haven't already told your friends and colleagues to support the People's March for the NHS, please do today!
The next generation know we need the NHS, thanks to good teaching!
