This morning 5 coachloads of Teaching Assistants left Derby to lobby MPs outside parliament. This day of industrial action comes as the council tries to impose pay cuts of up to 25% on teaching assistants.
Derby's TAs are taking action on the same day as TAs in a similar situation in County Durham. The background to this situation is government policy but the councils should not be making hard-working, already underpaid staff pay the price.
The NUT is proud to stand in solidarity with TAs, vital members of staff who have seen their income slashed.
Please read the information below from Ash Morley of UNISON for some details about the situation and links to the hardship fund and Facebook campaign, and continue to help the TAs in any way you can.
“Members were asked to decide whether they accept or reject the offer put forward by Derby City Council.
92% voted to reject the offer.
The result of the ballot shows that our members feel very strongly about this issue and are unwilling to stop until they are compensated for the unsustainable and unfair position they have been placed in, since having their pay reduced by up to 25%.
This is pushing our members into poverty, some can’t afford to feed their families and are looking to sell their homes as a result of this.
Our members have reinforced a very clear mandate for further action and members of the public are being incredibly supportive by donating to our hardship fund, which will support members wishing to take part in action.
The employer has been notified of our intention to take industrial action on Wednesday 14 September. We will be lobbying MP’S outside the Houses of Parliament shortly after the conclusion of Prime Ministers Questions. We already have a number of MP’S and political figures pledging support to the campaign.”
