Our first Great Missed Speech blog post is Rob Dewick's which was in support of Motion 14 on CEO pay in academies.
The text of the motion is here (page 33):
And here is Rob's speech!
Asset stripping vultures
Here is a copy the proposed speech in favour of conference motion 14 by Delegate Robert Dewick.
Conference, president.
I'm here as an activist because of the NUT/ATL impressive merger. Over many years I have witnessed the Tories driving wedges between unions to diminish the power of teachers to protect education from ideogically driven politicians. One union = more influence, I applaud your approach to this.
The public accounts committee have expressed deep concern over this corporate free for all , where fat cat CEO s are taking huge salaries. The committee stated that the DOE's rules around related party transactions are too weak to prevent abuse. Schools are struggling to recruit teachers in a wide range of subjects. In my specialism chemistry, some schools cannot find teachers, meaning that some children will be denied a broad balanced curriculum. Chemistry and technology are expensive subjects we must be vigilant to make sure all students have access to studying them. I'm not talking about privately educated children of course. These schools are poaching the best teachers from the state schools as our pay and conditions are being erroded.
Have we not learned anything from the collapse of carillion and the disasterous PFI contracts. Casino capitalism is now invading our schools through the MAT s. Education needs to be brought back into total public ownership with democratic local oversight. The failure of the Wakefield MAT is a warning to parents that their school could become a victim of asset stripping vultures. We must vigorously challenge excessive CEO pay, I move to support the motion.
