At our Extraordinary General Meeting last week we agreed that an urgent campaign needs to be mounted over pay.
To recap the main issues:
- Over the last 8 years, teacher's pay has declined around 15% in real terms.
- Last year, the STRB's report indicated that teachers would need a real-terms pay uplift this year if the ongoing teacher recruitment and retention crisis is to be addressed (81% of teachers have considered leaving the profession in the last year; more on the shortfall in teachers coming in to the profession and the rise in teachers leaving here: https://www.teachers.org.uk/edufacts/teacher-recruitment-and-retention).
- This year the STRB recommended a 3.5% increase for all teachers, the first real-terms increase for 8 years.
- The Department for Education is ignoring the STRB's recommendation for the first time in 27 years and offering an increase for some teachers but not everyone - and the increase will not be fully funded, putting pressure on school budgets.
Our motion demands the following:
- Full implementation of the limited pay increase offered by the Department for Education
- That this is not fair on teachers or schools and should be a fully funded 3.5% for all teachers.
- That MPs and the Derby City Council should be asked to support this campaign
- That the national union should prepare to ballot all members in support of a fully-funded 3.5% for all.
- That school union groups should be urged to hold meetings and put similar motions. It is vital for our campaign to be successful that members are informed of the issues and prepared to support it. This is a real opportunity to reverse some of the pressures that have contributed to so many of the problems teaching and education are facing - and can help to end the funding cuts affecting so many schools nationally.
What can you do?
- Hold meetings in your schools! A model motion and letter to your MP can be found here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_wzQOODPQm-fj5M28lyzTt6pAnFPn2fa
- If you hold a meeting, email kieran.picken@neu.org.uk or phone or text 07947 668 268 for more information and resources, or for help organising the meeting if there is no rep in your school!
