During the pandemic it has for obvious reasons been difficult to organise demonstrations on the scale that the anti-racist movement in this country has been used to. Unfortunately, the far right have been able to organise with some success during this time, including a rally of some 800 followers of Tommy Robinson in Telford at the end of January.
UN Anti-Racism Day in March, organised by Stand Up To Racism, is an annual demonstration that shows the broad alliance of anti-racists across the country - and sends a clear message that the vast majority of people of the UK will have nothing to do with the racist cliques of the far right. The trades union movement and the NEU in particular have a proud tradition of anti-racism and the demonstration saw many trades union groups on the march. The event was supported by the TUC and well in excess of 10,000 people took to the streets in the largest demonstration seen since the pandemic.
Below are some pictures from the day. Well done to Derby NEU members, Derby Stand Up To Racism and the Derby Indian Workers Association for joining on the day and organising such a brilliant coach load going down.
At our last Committee Meeting, Derby NEU had agreed to pay for the lunches for the asylum seekers who joined the coach, and pay towards the cost of the coach Derby SUTR had put on. We are proud to be able to show solidarity and be part of the anti-racist movement.
